Domain Registrar or Hosting Provider?

07 Jan

There is sometimes confusion out there for people who are new to the web or maybe trying to get online.  The confusion is based upon whether people should use a domain registrar or web hosting company to get their website up on the web.

The answer is that often there is no difference between the two.  Domain Registries will focus on domains as their lead product, but will almost always offer hosting for your website.  Hosting companies on the other hand will focus on web hosting as their lead product, but will also offer domain registration.

There are two very simple factors to think about:

1. Whoever you choose to host your website with make sure you determine which country your site is hosted in, is it in the country you reside in and that is relevant to your domain.  For example if a .ie domain, is your site hosted in Ireland.

2. Whoever registers your domain, are they an authorised registry for that domain in that country and can ensure you’re domain is registered correctly.

We’re not saying these are the only considerations, but important if you want good search engine performance.

Top 5 ‘Tips’ in choosing your hosting company….

12 Dec

Here are our top 5 tips in choosing a web hosting company…

1. Reputation – Has the Hosting company being in business for some time and is well know for it’s service and support?
2. Getting in Touch – Obviously you can send an email or submit a ticket, but can you call a person and talk through any problems you have?
3. Security and Location – Make sure your site is hosted where you think it is, and is in at least a Tier 3 Datacentre. If it’s the other side of the World you will have support issues simply because of the time difference. Nothing worse than needing a quick answer and have to wait 6 hours or more.
4. Technical Expertise – Do they have the expertise that you need for your hosting requirements, do they know what they are talking about?
5. Value for Money – Don’t go for the cheapest, go for value. Read the small print and make sure there is no nasty hidden charges.

The best cloud computing company; is there such a thing??

06 Nov

Many cloud computing companies are claiming to be the best thing since sliced bread. Suddenly there are thousands of cloud computing companies all claiming to be the best, and so the obvious question is, who is?

Well common sense says that there can’t be just one and there are so many factors that determine what makes a good cloud company. Some may say that size does not matter, but of course that simply is not true.

The simple answer is that the best Cloud Computing Companies are the ones that are right for you, can deliver all the standard benefits of the cloud, including security, high availability, scalability, fast deployment and offer clear benefits to your organisation over and above their competitors.

Whatever your cloud computing need make sure you have have a detailed RFI – Request for Information and then follow up with a refined RFQ – Request for Quotation and don’t just settle for what may at the outset look great value. Make sure your cloud service provider backs up there quotation with a full SLA – Service Level Agreement and Contract.

Which Cloud Computing company should I choose?

28 Sep

This is a very good question, as there are numerous cloud computing companies out there and by it’s very nature many cloud companies across the globe will be trying to sell you their cloud claiming that geographic location no longer matters when it comes to the Cloud. So you’ll have everyone from the US to Australia to China offering you Cloud services.

But is that really true? Does it really matter where your data is if it is in the Cloud? Well it’s not just about where your data is, its more about the level of support you will get. Very simple things like time zones play a part in getting what you really need. Again many cloud companies will offer 24/7 support, but is their technical talent really available 24/7 or are you getting a call centre?

Don’t just be lead by the price, you only pay for what you get. Many Cloud companies have their ‘lost leaders’ by way of very cheap storage and resources often priced by the minute, this is just to get you through the door and to buy and then all the extras start adding up. Once you’re all set up its a real pain to start moving away and that’s when the extra costs start being piled on. Make sure you know exactly what you’re getting for your money.

So less of the negative stuff, there are some great cloud computing companies out there, here are a few we came across:

Cloud Computing Solutions UK – Cloudhosting.co.uk
Cloud Computing Solutions Ireland – Hostingireland.ie
Cloud Computing Solutions UK – Cloud-computing-france.com

Let us know of any other cloud computing companies that you’ve had experience with and tell us what you found great or what you found not so great…

Should I be thinking of using Cloud Hosting?

18 Sep

We all want to use the latest technology, but should I be using the Cloud. Chances are you are already using some form of Cloud Computing as most of the household names that we use every day are utilising the Cloud. However, you may be thinking should I be using the Cloud for my business or for hosting my website? Well the answer depends on a number of factors:

1. Does my current hosting provider already utilise cloud computing technology? If so you may already be benefiting from the cloud without you even knowing it.
2. Do you have an ecommerce site or a portfolio/brochure site? If an ecommerce site then a cloud hosting package maybe of benefit. If a portfolio or brochure site then shared hosting should be fine.
3. What is the usage profile like for your site? Are your visitor volume, conversions and purchases seasonal? If so the flexibility of a cloud server may be right for you.
4. Is your business in start-up? The cloud can definitely help here if you are expecting a ramp up in growth and usage.

We’re not suggesting that you’re missing out by not being in the Cloud, but its well worth your while speaking with a trusting Cloud Hosting provider to see if you can avail of improved service levels and of course and improvement in your bottom line.

There are three things you should have in mind when considering if a Cloud Computing hosting platform is right for you:

1. Are you getting more flexibility and scalability?
2. Do you have improved uptime and backup for your date?
3. Are you getting value for money?

We’ll be back with more insights on Cloud hosting shortly…..

What domain name should I choose?

24 Jun

Choosing good domain names is an often overlooked or underestimated step or setting up an online presence, the steps you may take go along the lines of…

1. Is my company name available to register as a domain?

2. What type of domain tld should I register, .com, .ie, .co.uk?

However, have you ever stopped to consider if your keywords are available as a domain name?

The next time you are searching for your “web hosting” for instance, check out the best performing domains. Generally these domain names include the search term you are searching for.

The reason for this is because if I register “Web Hosting UK” every link I get from other websites has that term in it “web hosting uk”, If i get enough sites linking to my site with the text “Web Hosting UK” then bingo! im top for the search term.

Keep this in mind if you are considering domain name registration.

cPanel Hosting Accounts

What is cPanel?

cpanel hosting logoSimply put, cPanel is a control panel. Similar to the control panel on your pc that allows you to change settings on your local pc, cPanel is a control panel that allows you to control settings on your hosting account.

To try out a demo you can visit the cpanel website here

cpanel screen shot

cPanel has a few uses, it can be installed on a server to manage the user accounts and features available on a dedicated/shared server, it also has individual area’s too that allow clients to log in and set up/ manage email accounts, databases, add on domains, sub domains and ftp accounts and loads more too.

Many custom built hosting control panels tend to be a bit clunky in my experience but the cPanel control panel is really easy to use and fast.

So, in conclusion, when looking to register a new domain and hosting, my recommendation is to look for a cpanel hosting provider.

PHP – Do i need it?

16 Jul

Why use PHPAll these hosting companies raving about providing PHP, it’s available on all Linux hosting accounts and nearly every blog and ecommerce site requires it…but what is it exactly?

PHP is a large part of website development; it is a scripting language used to create dynamic content on your web pages. Some common uses for PHP are contact us forms, questionnaires, login and register now forms, forums and wordpress type blogs.

PHP allows the server to precompile the html code based on the arguments provided. So for example if you ever see a .php page on a website with a ?id=123 the php is taking the id 123 and applying it to the website content. So therefore, often you will see the details of say product 123 on your page. That same PHP page can handle all the products you like by just changing the id argument.

PHP stands for “Hypertext Pre-processor”.
HTML stands for “Hypertext Markup Language”

So PHP basically pre-processes (or compiles) the common HTML.

So in answer to the question of this article, do you need PHP?
1. If you are just installing Forum software or Blogging software, you will need PHP on your hosting account. But you won’t need to be able to program in PHP as all the programming has been done for you.

2. If you are wanting to build a dynamic website (like an online shop for instance) or have interaction with your visitors through an online form, you will need to be able to program in PHP (or know someone who can!)

cPanel – an introduction

12 Jul

Most hosting companies provide a control panel where you can access your logs, set up email accounts, create sub domains and even manage your files.

The most common control panel used (probably because it is the best available) is called cPanel, this is generally provided free of charge by most reputable web hosting companies.
cPanel access differs from one hosting provider to another, some access it through a port at the end of the domain (e.g domain.com:1234) others provide a directory type structure (e.g domain.com/cpanel).

Once logged into cPanel you are presented with a wide range of options and useful information about your hosting account, how much diskspace you are using on your account and how many resources you have available.

We will address these features one by one in this tutorial section.
