Choosing good domain names is an often overlooked or underestimated step or setting up an online presence, the steps you may take go along the lines of…

1. Is my company name available to register as a domain?

2. What type of domain tld should I register, .com, .ie, .co.uk?

However, have you ever stopped to consider if your keywords are available as a domain name?

The next time you are searching for your “web hosting” for instance, check out the best performing domains. Generally these domain names include the search term you are searching for.

The reason for this is because if I register “Web Hosting UK” every link I get from other websites has that term in it “web hosting uk”, If i get enough sites linking to my site with the text “Web Hosting UK” then bingo! im top for the search term.

Keep this in mind if you are considering domain name registration.

What is cPanel?

Simply put, cPanel is a control panel. Similar to the control panel on your pc that allows you to change settings on your local pc, cPanel is a control panel that allows you to control settings on your hosting account.

To try out a demo you can visit the cpanel website here

cPanel has a few uses, it can be installed on a server to manage the user accounts and features available on a dedicated/shared server, it also has individual area’s too that allow clients to log in and set up/ manage email accounts, databases, add on domains, sub domains and ftp accounts and loads more too.

Many custom built hosting control panels tend to be a bit clunky in my experience but the cPanel control panel is really easy to use and fast.

So, in conclusion, when looking to register a new domain and hosting, my recommendation is to look for a cpanel hosting provider.

All these hosting companies raving about providing PHP, it’s available on all Linux hosting accounts and nearly every blog and ecommerce site requires it…but what is it exactly?

PHP is a large part of website development; it is a scripting language used to create dynamic content on your web pages. Some common uses for PHP are contact us forms, questionnaires, login and register now forms, forums and wordpress type blogs.

PHP allows the server to precompile the html code based on the arguments provided. So for example if you ever see a .php page on a website with a ?id=123 the php is taking the id 123 and applying it to the website content. So therefore, often you will see the details of say product 123 on your page. That same PHP page can handle all the products you like by just changing the id argument.

PHP stands for “Hypertext Pre-processor”.
HTML stands for “Hypertext Markup Language”

So PHP basically pre-processes (or compiles) the common HTML.

So in answer to the question of this article, do you need PHP?
1. If you are just installing Forum software or Blogging software, you will need PHP on your hosting account. But you won’t need to be able to program in PHP as all the programming has been done for you.

2. If you are wanting to build a dynamic website (like an online shop for instance) or have interaction with your visitors through an online form, you will need to be able to program in PHP (or know someone who can!)

Most hosting companies provide a control panel where you can access your logs, set up email accounts, create sub domains and even manage your files.

The most common control panel used (probably because it is the best available) is called cPanel, this is generally provided free of charge by most reputable web hosting companies.
cPanel access differs from one hosting provider to another, some access it through a port at the end of the domain (e.g domain.com:1234) others provide a directory type structure (e.g domain.com/cpanel).

Once logged into cPanel you are presented with a wide range of options and useful information about your hosting account, how much diskspace you are using on your account and how many resources you have available.

We will address these features one by one in this tutorial section.

If you are looking to host a new website in the UK, or, you are an established company looking to expand your website’s capabilities, you will need to know you can rely on your web hosting provider. This blog has been set up to offer some advice on which hosting companies you want to get involved with and which you should avoid.

If you are new to hosting; reviews will be invaluable to you as once your website is up and running it is a pain to have to start transferring the site over to a new hosting company. Some hosting companies try to make this process as complicated as possible for people transferring away from them. Viewing good reviews before hand can provide you enough information to make an informed decision on which web hosting company in the uk you will choose.

If you are an established company; reviews will also be helpful as they can provide the “real” support information like how quick and efficient a ticket was answered. Before you place your companies website and possibly email too in the care of an unknown hosting company or before you purchase a dedicated server from them it would be wise to do some research on the company before hand.

What about if you already have a hosting account? Well, how do you know that the price you are paying is the most competetive?
It can save a lot of time and possibly money to check reviews first of all, sometimes the cheapest aren’t always the best so before buying your hosting account it can be beneficial to check reviews.

We can also provide information about what services the hosting companies offer, so as a starting point you know the web hosting company provide that services that you are looking for, saving you time and effort.
